Understanding TikTok Shop UK return windows and auto-approval
When a UK buyer opens a return request, TikTok gives you a fixed window to approve or reject. Miss it and the return is auto-approved. Here's how the windows work and what Foregrade does to keep you ahead of them.

The two return-request types
When a buyer opens a request on TikTok Shop UK, it's one of two kinds:
- Refund-only — the buyer wants their money back but is not shipping the item back (or they never received it).
- Return-and-refund — the buyer is shipping the item back and wants a refund once you confirm receipt.
The decision window is different for each, and on UK Shop it also depends on order value.
The decision windows (UK)
For UK TikTok Shop, the auto-approval window depends on the order value, with £100 as the pivot:
| Order value | Refund-only | Return-and-refund |
|---|---|---|
| < £100 | 2 business days | 2 business days |
| ≥ £100 | 4 business days | 4 business days |
If you don't explicitly approve or reject within the window, TikTok auto-approves the request.
Business days exclude weekends and TikTok-observed UK bank holidays (England + Wales calendar). The clock runs on TikTok Shop UK's calendar, not your local timezone — if you're abroad, the clock still ticks.
> Pre-April-2026 returns may show under the legacy single-band window. Foregrade reads the deadline TikTok stamps on each return, so the displayed countdown is always authoritative regardless of when the return was opened.
Why auto-approval is a problem
Once a request is auto-approved, your recourse is narrow:
- Refund-only: TikTok refunds the buyer. You keep referral / transaction / campaign fees only if TikTok's partial-refund logic applies (it usually doesn't on auto-approved cases). You do not recover your product cost.
- Return-and-refund: The buyer gets a return label. If they never ship the item back, you can escalate after the return shipping window closes — but by then TikTok has usually released the refund.
In practice, auto-approved returns are the single biggest source of preventable loss for most TikTok Shop UK sellers.
What Foregrade does
Foregrade monitors every open return request against the TikTok deadline clock:
- 24h, 12h, and 2h reminders via email and in-app notification for every request where you haven't decided yet. (On the 4-business-day high-value band, an additional 48h reminder fires for the first warning.)
- Return automation rules (Starter+) let you auto-approve low-value returns and auto-reject on specific fraud signals so you never hit the wall.
- Serial returner flag (Growth+) on the buyer's record so you don't auto-approve a return for someone who's returned 4 of their last 6 orders.
What you should still do manually
- Check high-value returns personally. No rule catches nuance on a £200 order.
- Review dispute evidence when a buyer requests return-and-refund for a claimed defect — photos, tracking confirmation, and your product history matter.
- Keep your business hours and coverage documented. If you're closing for a bank holiday weekend, check the queue the day before — the 2/4-business-day clock doesn't care that you took the weekend off.
